Dehumidifier Use and Maintenance

During humid summer weather, you may want to use a dehumidifier to help make your home more comfortable.

Time Needed: 10 minutes
Frequency: at least once each year
Number of steps: 3
Tools you might need: small brush (do not use wire bristles)
Skill level: easy
What if I don’t do this? Less moisture removed from the air, increased operating costs, shorter appliance life

Step 1: Plan Ahead

Always read manufacturer instructions for proper use and care. Dehumidifier should be placed on level surface and area should be kept clear of obstructions. See also: Controlling Indoor HumidityAdjusting Moisture and Humidity

Step 2: Keep It Running

Water level should be checked at least once each day and the water tray emptied. If the water tray is full, the dehumidifier shuts off. On some models, the water can also be run directly to a floor drain with a garden hose. Be sure to cut hose as short as possible. Check regularly to make sure water is running to drain.

Step 3: Keep It Clean

Dehumidifier coils or filter screen should be cleaned at least once each year. A small brush can be used to remove dust and lint accumulation. Never use a brush with wire bristles, coils can be easily damaged.
