Door and Storm Door Maintenance

Periodic, and sometimes seasonal, adjustment of doors is normal. It is also important to keep storm doors clear of ice and snow. They can be damaged if forced. Door thresholds can be adjusted if you feel a draft

Step 1: Preventive Maintenance

Keep path of storm door clear of ice and snow buildup. Storm doors can be permanently damaged if forced against ice or snow. Be careful not to damage storm door weatherstrip with shovel.

Step 2: Proper Operation

Most storm doors have automatic closers. Some of these can be adjusted for winter and summer use. Closers also have a "stop" to keep the door open temporarily. Be sure stops are slid to the end of the track when not in use. Never force the door closed against the stop!

Step 3: Inspect And Adjust

Many storm doors have weatherstrips on the bottom. Some can be adjusted with a screwdriver if necessary. Check these once each year.

Step 4: Inspect And Adjust

Check door weatherstripping and thresholds. Doors should fit snugly and you should not be able to see light or feel drafts around the edges. Door thresholds can be adjusted with a screwdriver. Turn the adjustment screws slightly, one at a time, to achieve proper fit. If you are uncertain how, or unable to adjust the door threshold, contact your builder.
